“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom.” James 3:13 (NKJV)
If the Christian man, woman, boy or girl is to have real control over their tongue it will require godly wisdom. One of the wisest of men was Solomon, and he is a man who had enough wisdom to know that true wisdom only comes from the person of wisdom, and that is God. Many of the writtings of the Biblical book of Proverbs was written by Solomon. It is a book of wisdom. It says much about the use of the tongue, and we have seen a few of those verses in the past few studies.
There are at least nineteen references to the tongue in the book of Proverbs. The writer, in wisdom gives both the good use of the tongue and its evil use. The wise individual will seek to use the tongue wisely.
One of the places for us to begin using wisdom of the tongue is in our homes. Husbands, though growing aggravated with their wives can use the tongue for good in such situations. When she becomes angry, or upset over something which may seem trivial to the man; let him find a way of comforting and encourageing her rather than criticizing her. Likewise with the wisdom of the wife; when it seems that your husband is discouraged and wants time alone, or even time watching the television, let him know with godly wisdom that you are there for him, that you love him. It is not a time to criticize. For parents who grow frustrated with a child; this is a time for your godly wisdom as well. This is a time our humanity, not wisdom usually comes out, but if we guard our hearts and minds by the Spirit of Jesus Christ we can use wisdom. Children can see our wisdom, and will learn to practice it as well. When your son fails to get that touchdown in a football game don’t tell him how terrible a play that was; tell him how great an effort he made.
“3:13 wise and understanding. ‘Wise’ is the common Gr. word for speculative knowledge and philosophy, but the Hebrews infused it with the much richer meaning of skillfully applying knowledge to the matter of practical living. The word for ‘understanding’ is used only here in the NT and means a specialist or professional who could skillfully apply his expertise to practical situations. James is asking who is skilled in the art of living. meekness. Also rendered ‘gentleness,’ it is the opposite of arrogance and self-promotion (see note on Matt. 5:5; cf. 1:21; Num. 12:3; Gal. 5:23). The Greeks described it as power under control. wisdom. The kind that comes only from God.” The MacArthur Study Bible, p.1931.
True godly wisdom comes only through knowing the Person of wisdom, and that Person is the Lord Jesus Christ. The wisdom of God is given us as we yield our hearts, souls, minds and bodies to Him as the Lord of our lives, and as we seek it from Him. If you do not yet know Jesus, by having a personal relationship with Him, then, right now, confess that you are a sinner, ask forgiveness for your sins, and ask the crucified, buried and risen Lord Jesus to save you. He will hear you and give you eternal life, and more wisdom.
